Terms of Service

Last updated: October 14, 2026. See also our Privacy Policy.

1. Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or using Compendly ("the Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don't agree, don't use the Service.

2. What Compendly does

Compendly turns lecture videos, audio recordings, and PDF slides you provide into structured study notes, using automated transcription and AI-generated summarization. You can export the result as Word (.docx), PDF or HTML.

3. Your account

You need an account to use the Service. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity under your account. You must provide accurate information and keep it up to date.

4. Plans, credits, and billing

New accounts get a one-time free trial allotment of minutes, no card required. Paid plans (currently Student and Pro, billed monthly or annually) grant a monthly allotment of credits used to process your uploads; unused credits from one billing period do not carry over to the next.

Paid plans are billed in advance through our payment processor, Stripe, and renew automatically until you cancel. You can cancel or change your plan at any time from your account's billing portal — you'll keep access through the end of the period you've already paid for. Except where required by law, we don't provide refunds for partial billing periods.

You can also buy one-time packs of extra minutes, with or without a paid plan. Extra minutes are used after your monthly minutes, stay on your account if you cancel a plan, and expire 12 months after your latest purchase. They are delivered to your account immediately after payment. Except where required by law, extra minutes are non-refundable once purchased.

When you buy a plan or extra minutes, you ask us to deliver the service immediately. You acknowledge that you lose any right of withdrawal once the service has been fully provided or the minutes have been used.

If a payment fails, we may suspend your paid access until it's resolved. We may change plan pricing going forward; changes won't apply retroactively to a period you've already paid for.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to use Compendly to:

  • Upload or process content you don't have the right to record, upload, or share — including recordings of other people made without their knowledge or consent, where required, and copyrighted material (e.g. paid courses, films, or other media) you don't own or have permission to process.
  • Provide a URL for us to download when doing so would violate that platform's own terms of service (for example, downloading YouTube videos outside what YouTube's terms permit). You're responsible for complying with the terms of any third-party site or platform you link to.
  • Upload unlawful, infringing, or malicious content, or content that violates a third party's rights.
  • Attempt to circumvent credit limits, abuse the free trial (e.g. creating multiple accounts to obtain additional free credits), or interfere with the Service's normal operation.
  • Reverse engineer, scrape, or resell access to the Service without our permission.

You are solely responsible for having the necessary rights, licenses, and consent for any content you process through the Service — including recordings that include other people and material you don't hold the copyright to — see our Privacy Policy for more on this. We expressly distance ourselves from, and take no responsibility for, any use of the Service that violates another person's privacy, consent, intellectual property, or other legal rights.

6. Copyright complaints

If you believe content processed through Compendly infringes your copyright, email us at hello@compendly.com with a description of the work, the material you believe infringes it, and your contact details. We'll review the report and take appropriate action, which may include removing content or suspending the account involved.

7. Your content

You retain ownership of the files you upload and the notes generated from them. By uploading content, you grant us a limited license to process it — including sending it to our AI/transcription providers — solely to provide the Service to you. We don't use your uploaded content to train AI models, and we don't claim ownership over it.

8. AI-generated content

Notes generated by Compendly are produced automatically and may contain errors, omissions, or inaccuracies. They are a study aid, not a verified or authoritative record of the original material. You're responsible for reviewing generated notes before relying on them, academically or otherwise.

You are responsible for what you do with the notes you generate, including sharing them with classmates, publishing them, or using them in coursework. You are also responsible for following your school's or employer's rules on AI tools and academic integrity. We are not responsible for how notes you share are used by others.

9. Intellectual property

The Service itself — including its software, design, and branding — belongs to us and is protected by applicable intellectual property laws. These Terms don't grant you any rights to it beyond using the Service as intended.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose. We don't guarantee the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Compendly and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any damages arising from your use of the Service, content you upload or generate, or how you use the output. This includes, without limitation, any consequences arising from a recording processed without proper consent or authorization. Where liability can't be excluded by law, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the 3 months before the claim arose.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Service, your content, or your violation of these Terms — including claims brought by someone who appears in a recording you processed without their consent.

13. Suspension and termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if you violate these Terms, misuse the Service, or if required by law. You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from your account settings.

14. Changes to the Service or these Terms

We may update the Service or these Terms from time to time. If we make material changes to these Terms, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

15. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Norway, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.

16. General

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remain in full effect. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and us regarding the Service, and supersede any prior agreements on the subject. We may assign these Terms in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets; you may not assign them without our consent.
